Iga Swiatek advanced to the second round at Wimbledon, starting her quest for a first grass-court major title with a straight-sets victory over Sofia Kenin.

The top seed, aiming to surpass her previous best of reaching the quarter-finals at SW19, won 6-3, 6-4 in 79 minutes on No.1 Court.

Swiatek had previously defeated Kenin twice at major events: the 2020 French Open final and this year's Australian Open first round. The four-time Roland-Garros champion made her intentions clear by breaking Kenin twice in her first two service games to take the opening set.

Kenin, a former Australian Open champion who upset Coco Gauff in the first round last year, tried to fight back. She forced a break-point opportunity at 4-3 down in the second set but missed it by sending a forehand into the net. The set remained on serve as Swiatek secured a second-round match against Croatia's Petra Martic.

"On this surface, it's not about the result for me; it's about the progress," Swiatek said during her on-court interview. "I'm just trying to be better every day. It was a solid start and not an easy draw, so I'm happy that I have a chance to play another match here."
