Lionel Messi Copa America

Argentina's Lionel Messi, the most decorated footballer of all time, has shared an update on the injury he suffered during the Copa America 2024 Final.

The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner had to leave the field in the 66th minute due to an ankle injury. He was seen crying inconsolably after being substituted.

The Copa America is over and the first thing I want to do is thank everyone for the messages and greetings. I'm fine, thank God, and I hope I can be back on the field soon enjoying what I like to do the most.

I'm very happy, especially because we achieved the goal we had and Fide is leaving us but with another Cup. The older ones, like him, Ota or me, lived it with special emotion, with other teammates who have already played in several tournaments and add their experience as well, and with a group of youngsters who give their all in every ball. We are a team and also a family, a spectacular group, Messi wrote on Instagram along with the photos after winning record 16th Copa title on Sunday .

Thanks to everyone who was supporting us, this team has a lot of present and a lot of future too. Go Argentina, damn it!, he added.

Argentina won the Copa 2024 Final against Columbia 1-0 in extra time, thanks to a goal by Lautaro Martinez in 112th minute. It was Argentina's 16th Copa America title - the most for any country.

This is also South American nation's third consecutive major title after winning 2021 Copa America and FIFA World Cup 2022.

Messi, despite being injured, also entered the record books by winning his 45th trophy - one more than former teammate Dani Alves' tally of 44.

Argentina will now face Euro 2024 winners Spain in Finalissima 2025 - a match between Euro and Copa America winners.
