West Asia crisis Iran preparing to attack Israel ahead of US presidential election, Says Report
Israel intelligence has suggested that Iran is preparing to attack Israel in the coming days, possibly before the November 5 presidential election in the United States (US), Axios reported on Friday (Nov 1) citing two sources.
The sources said that the attack was expected to be carried out from Iraq using a large number of drones and ballistic missiles.
This development came a day after Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps commander Hossein Salami said that Israel made a mistake when it attacked Iran last week.
Israel and Iran have engaged in a series of tit-for-tat military strikes, part of broader West Asia warfare set off by fighting in the Gaza Strip.
On October 1, Iran launched more than 200 missiles against Israel.
Israel retaliated last weekend with military jets striking missile factories and other sites near Tehran and in western Iran.
Tehran said it lost four soldiers in the attack and said the strikes caused limited damage.
Iran further said that it was entitled and obligated to defend itself.
'Iran is planning a definitive and painful response'
On Wednesday, an Iranian source told CNN that Tehran was planning a definitive and painful response (against Israel) that would likely come before the presidential election in the United States.
The source said that the Iranian retaliation was certain, adding, that the response would be strong and would make Israel regret its attack.
Israel can reach anywhere in Iran, says Netanyahu
Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Thursday that his country could reach anywhere in Iran if the need arose.
Prime Minister Netanyahu, in a speech to new military officers, said that Israel has unprecedented freedom of action following its recent airstrikes against Iran.
"Israel today has more freedom of action in Iran than ever.
We can reach any place in Iran as necessary.
The supreme goal I gave to the Israel Defence Forces and the security branches is to prevent Iran from achieving a nuclear weapon," Netanyahu said.
