Shami undergoes surgery for Achilles tendon set to miss IPL 2024

RECOVERY UPDATE

Mohammed Shami hasn't played competitive cricket since the 2023 50-over World Cup.

Mohammed Shami, who has been out of competitive cricket since the World Cup in November, underwent surgery in London on Monday. The operation targeted his Achilles tendon, a part that has been bothering him since the World Cup. Shami mentioned that the recovery process will take some time, expressing hope to resume his cricketing journey soon. He shared this update through a social media post along with a picture of himself.

"Looking forward to getting back on my feet," Shami wrote on a social media post and posted a picture of him.

Shami's most recent competitive appearance was in the World Cup final held in Ahmedabad on November 19. Since then, he has been absent from the full-fledged tour of South Africa, the home T20I series against Afghanistan, and the ongoing five-Test series against England.

It can now be confirmed that he will be unavailable for the entirety of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Additionally, his participation in the Twenty20 World Cup in June also remains uncertain. Prior to undergoing surgery, Shami sought expert opinion in London after the management at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru recommended the procedure.

Meanwhile, the Indian team, fresh from their victory over England in Ranchi on Monday, has been granted a four-day break. They will disperse from Ranchi on Tuesday and reassemble in Dharamsala, the venue for the fifth and final Test, on March 3. The Test match is scheduled to commence on March 7. India have taken an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-Test series.
