Players challenges will be more says Virender Sehwag on Gautam Gambhir as new India head coach

Former India opener Virender Sehwag believes that it'll be more challenging for players than new head coach Gautam Gambhir who recently replaced Rahul Dravid as the new India coach.
Dravid left the position after India's T20 World Cup triumph but Gambhir started his tenure with an ODI series loss against Sri Lanka after winning T20I series 3-0.

"I don't think there is much challenge because there are more professionals there.

Recently the players have won the T20 World Cup, the players know what their role is. With Gambhir's arrival, the players will get clarity that this is the role, you have to do this. So this will be a benefit to the Indian team," Sehwag said in a conversation with news outlet Amar Ujala.
"Gambhir's challenges will be less and the players' challenges will be more because they will feel that we have won the T20 World Cup, so now we should win the Champions Trophy or the ODI World Cup or the Test Championship. So the players will have more challenges than the coach. Because Gambhir is there to help them," he added.

Gambhir's next assignments are all red-ball cricket series with Bangladesh touring India for a two-Test series before New Zealand tours India for three-Test series.

India then travels to Australia for a five-Test Border-Gavaskar series with an aim to win their third consecutive Test series down under.

England then travels India for a white-ball tour which consists three T20Is and and as many ODIs before India plays their first ICC tournament - the ICC Champions Trophy.

Pakistan is scheduled to host the ICC tournament - their first since joint hosting 1996 ODI World Cup with Sri Lanka and India - from mid February to March early next year.

Gambhir's rise as a coach was due to his IPL success where he took Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to 2024 title in his first season as a mentor upon return. He was mentor of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) prior to that.
