Dominant WA edge closer to another title

SHEFFIELD SHIELD, 2023-24

Hilton Cartwright scored a second-innings half-century.

A dominant performance from Western Australia on the third day has put them in complete control of the Sheffield Shield final. By stumps on the third day, WA dragged their lead over Tasmania to almost 400 and given they still have seven wickets in hand, the defending champions are now outright favourites to win their third straight title.

Tasmania, who were reeling at 152/6 by stumps on the second day, hardly put up a resistance once play got underway on Saturday. Corey Rocchiccioli, who had already bagged a couple of wickets, added to his tally to polish off the tail and finish with a four-wicket haul as Tasmania were bowled out for 186 to give the home side a lead of 161.

WA then lost skipper Sam Whiteman early for just 8 but D'Arcy Short and Jayden Goodwin ensured there were no hiccups. Even though they didn't cash in on their starts, they ensured the lead got closer to 300. Once they departed, Hilton Cartwright and Aaron Hardie took charge. Cartwright hit a patient unbeaten half-century and Hardie remained unbeaten on 39 by stumps as the duo almost added 100 for the fourth wicket to guide the lead to 382.

Brief scores: Western Australia 347 & 221/3 (Hilton Cartwright 62*, Jayden Goodwin 46; Iain Carlisle 1/31) lead Tasmania 186 (Caleb Jewell 45; Corey Rocchicciol 4/48) by 382 runs
