2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) Opening Test in Perth Stand-in Captain Jasprit Bumrah Was Over the Moon but also Respected 'Captain' Rohit Sharma Taking Over from the Second Test Onwards

BGT 2024/25 'Rohit is the captain, I was just Bumrah after leading India to historic Perth Test win

After leading India to a memorable win in the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) opening Test in Perth, stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah was over the moon but also respected 'captain' Rohit Sharma taking over from the second Test onwards.

The second Test starts in Adelaide on Dec. 6.

With Rohit out of the series opener due to paternity leave, Bumrah stepped up and led wonderfully to take India to a 1-0 lead.

Opting to bat first, India folded up for 150 on the opening day of the first Test but bounced back riding on Bumrah's 5-fer as they dismissed Australia for 104.

After a first innings lead of 46 runs, India declared their second innings at 487-6, setting a mammoth 534-run target.

Eventually, Australia got dismissed for 238 on the fourth day, on Monday (Nov. 25), as Bumrah became the first overseas captain to win a Test at the Optus Stadium, Perth.

Moreover, Bumrah also joined Anil Kumble to become the second Asian captain to win a Test in Perth.

Despite his achievements as captain, Bumrah reiterated that 'Rohit is the captain' and will take over from the Adelaide Test.

In the post-match presser, Bumrah said, "Rohit Sharma is the captain of our side, I was just filling in.

I am going to help in whatever capacity I can."

He further added, "When you get out on a low score, sometimes bowlers get desperate.

The message was clear to stick to the plans.

Very happy to get my first Test win as captain.

Even when I am not captain, I look to contribute as much as possible."

This became Bumrah's first Test win as captain.

Earlier, in mid-2022, he led India in a rescheduled Test versus England, in Edgbaston, however, the Asian giants lost the match by seven wickets despite setting a competitive 378-run target.

Rohit will take over and lead India in the second Test, which commences at the picturesque Adelaide Oval, Adelaide, on Dec 6.

The visitors, who won their last two Test series in Australia, have started the series with a bang and will be eager to go ahead with the winning momentum in Adelaide.

For Australia, the No. 1 ranked Test side, there are a lot of questions to be answered following a 295-run hammering at the hands of India.
