Suryakumar Yadav’s Form Under Spotlight As Former Cricketer Points Out Prolonged Dip Ahead Of T20 World Cup
India’s build-up to the T20 World Cup 2026 has begun on a dominant note, but the team management will be hoping for a turnaround from captain Suryakumar Yadav, whose quiet run with the bat continues to attract attention. India’s thumping 101-run win against South Africa in the first T20I showed their depth, yet the skipper’s form remains a lingering puzzle.
Former India wicketkeeper Deep Dasgupta shared a straightforward opinion, saying that the team has “still not seen the real impact” of Suryakumar in recent months. The explosive batter last scored a T20I half-century in October 2024, and has passed 25 only twice in his previous 15 T20I innings.
Dasgupta, however, praised India’s adaptability on a tricky Cuttack surface. He felt that while both Suryakumar and vice-captain Shubman Gill would ideally want more runs under their belt, India’s system allows others to step up when senior players are out of rhythm.
India’s innings was revived spectacularly by Hardik Pandya, who produced a blazing 59 off 28 balls, lifting the team from 48 for 3 to a competitive 175. The bowlers then dismantled South Africa for just 74, sealing a one-sided result.
Suryakumar, speaking after the match, emphasised that India will continue to back fearless cricket.
“With the kind of batting depth we have, some days others will take responsibility. The idea is to keep playing positive cricket,” he said. He added that Hardik was not used in the powerplay as the team is managing his workload after injury.
Despite India’s smooth preparations, one question remains: can their captain rediscover the explosive consistency he is known for before the World Cup arrives?
