The mortal remains of Wing Commander Namansh Syal, the Indian Air Force pilot who lost his life in a Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA Mk-1) crash during a demonstration flight at the Dubai Airshow on Friday, are expected to reach his native village in Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, by Sunday. A special IAF aircraft has been assigned to bring him home.
Wing Commander Syal, 37, was a decorated fighter pilot known for his professionalism and calm demeanour. He is survived by his wife—also an officer in the Indian Air Force—their six-year-old daughter, and his parents.
His uncle, Jogindernath Syal, confirmed that the family and local authorities have completed preparations for the cremation.
The Indian Air Force expressed deep grief over the loss, describing Syal as a “dedicated fighter pilot and a thorough professional” who served the nation with “unwavering commitment and exceptional skill.”
In a message shared on X, the IAF stated that Syal’s dignified personality and devotion to service had earned him immense respect. They also acknowledged the solidarity shown by UAE officials, colleagues, and Indian Embassy representatives who attended the ceremonial send-off.
The Tejas fighter jet crashed while performing low-level aerobatic manoeuvres on the final day of the five-day Dubai Airshow, which began on November 17. Images circulating online showed the aircraft hitting the ground before bursting into flames.
This was the second crash involving the Tejas LCA since its induction into the IAF in 2016. The previous incident took place near Jaisalmer in March 2024, where the pilot had safely ejected.
The aircraft involved in both accidents belonged to the Mk-1 fleet, comprising the IOC (initial operational clearance) and FOC (final operational clearance) variants. The IAF currently operates two squadrons of the LCA.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressed deep anguish over the tragedy, offering heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. “The nation stands firmly with the family in this tragic hour,” he said on Friday.
The IAF is in the process of inducting the advanced LCA Mk-1A variant, which features improved avionics, weapons integration, and enhanced operational capability.
