Taylor Fritz has been told what he needs to do if he wants to beat Jannik Sinner.
The American was beaten by the World number one for the fourth successive meeting at the ATP Finals.
Sinner secured a 6-4, 6-4 win over Fritz for the second time in the tournament, to lift the season-ending championship for the first time.
That was another crushing defeat for Fritz, who was also taken down by the Italian in the US Open final.
Rennae Stubbs tells Taylor Fritz what he must change against Jannik Sinner
Taylor Fritz has played Jannik Sinner three times in 2024 and not only did he come up short on each occasion, he even failed to win a set.
Fritz, 27, suffered a 6-3 6-4 7-5 loss on home soil at Flushing Meadows, and lost 6-4, 6-4 in both meetings with Sinner at the ATP Finals in front of his own fans.
Fritz has not taken a set off Sinner since his three set defeat to the two-time Grand Slam winner at the 2023 Indian Wells Masters.
Since he ascended to the top of the ATP Tour rankings, Fritz has struggled to get the better of Sinner, and former top 10 player Andrea Petkovic thinks she knows why.
“I think he plays too much through the court. I don’t think he goes for angles at all,” the German told the Rennae Stubbs podcast.
“When he runs into someone like Jannik Sinner it is actually mind blowing for me that he keeps beating Zverev, it is a mental thing, because Zverev also moves really well from the back of the court.
“If he wants to beat someone like Jannik Sinner, who he keeps running into as the end opponent, who he can’t get past, he needs to start getting to the angles.
He hits the ball well through the court but it doesn’t bother Jannik at all because he is so a good mover, he is always on balance.
“He doesn’t even miss, the fifth or the eight shot, but the 12th he does and that’s the difference, Jannik doesn’t. So he loses four and four or four and three.”
Taylor Fritz at career-high ranking after successful 2024 season
Despite failing to win the ATP Finals, Fritz has enjoyed a very solid and consistent season.
He claimed two titles, and reached his first Grand Slam final, which came on home soil at the US Open.
Fritz’s results have seen him climb career-high ranking of number four and sits just under 2000 points behind World number three Carlos Alcaraz.
After his defeat to Sinner in Turin, Fritz reflected on his season and is impressed with what he was able to achieve.
“When I reached the position of number 5 in the world in 2023 I often told myself that many who were behind me were probably better than me,” he said.
“I was 5 but I didn’t feel like one.
Now instead I feel like I belong to this category.
It was a fantastic year.
It gives me a lot of confidence to have this belief.”
