United States is going to polls to choose the country's 47th president on Nov 5.

Michigan is a key swing state which will prove crucial in deciding the final outcome of the presidential election.

After the 2020 United States Census, the state lost one seat after reapportionment and has 15 electoral votes in the Electoral College.

Democratic nominee Kamala Harris and Republican candidate Donald Trump have campaigned extensively in the state, trying to win working-class votes.

Harris has been pitching to protect union jobs and grow the middle class, while Trump has promised to keep undocumented immigrants from stealing American jobs.

Both are neck and neck right now in the state, as per polls.

The deadline to request a mail-in ballot is Nov 1 and the last date to vote early in person is Nov 3.

How does Michigan usually poll?
Michigan can go either way, however, history indicates that the Democrats might hold a slight lead.

George HW Bush was the last Republican presidential candidate to win with a majority in 1988. Ronald Reagan was the last Republican to win by double digits, sweeping 49 states in 1984.

Michigan has voted blue in every presidential election between 1992 and 2012, but only with a double-digit margin in 1996 and 2008.

In 2016, Trump registered an unexpected win, sweeping the Midwest and winning Michigan by a very narrow 0.23 per cent.

The state flipped blue in 2020, with Joe Biden registering a 2.78 per cent margin of victory.

In the 2024 election, winning over the traditionally Democratic Arab American voting bloc will be challenging as polls indicate the Democrats' pro-Israel policy might have alienated them.

Currently, two Democrats represent Michigan in the Senate Gary Peters and Debbie Stabenow, with Democrat Gretchen Whitmer as the Governor.
