Ratan Tata, the esteemed chairman emeritus of Tata Group, passed away at 86 late on Wednesday (Oct 9) after a prolonged illness.

He was admitted to the Breach Candy Hospital in south Mumbai due to his age-related medical conditions.

This was after, he issued a statement on Monday saying that there was "no cause for concern" and that he was undergoing a series of medical check-ups.

However, his medical situation had turned critical, culminating in a loss that will be felt deeply across the nation and beyond.

Born on 28 December 1937, Ratan Tata was one of the most celebrated industrialists and leaders around the globe.

His leadership saw the Tata Group expand globally by acquiring international companies, establishing Tata Group as a significant global player.

His demise marks the end of an era. He built a legacy of growth, resilience, and unmatched vision.

The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, took to his official X account and expressed grief by calling him an extraordinary human being and a visionary business leader.
The Indian President Droupadi Murmu said that India has lost an icon who blended growth with nation-building.

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates mourned the demise of Ratan Tata and said he was a visionary leader who left an indelible mark on India.

Aditya Birla Group Chairman, Kumar Mangalam Birla, expressed deep sorrow over Ratan Tata's demise and called him a true visionary.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah made a heartfelt post on Twitter expressing his grief over the passing of the great industrialist Ratan Tata, calling him a true nationalist and a legendary industrialist.

US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti took to X to express his condolences, saying the World and India have "lost a giant with a giant heart".

Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani expressed his heartfelt condolences to X, saying it is a sad day for India and that losing Ratan Tata is a "big loss" to every Indian. 

Ratan Tata was among India’s most loved and respected human beings who took the Tata group to new heights and was honoured with the Padma Vibhushan Award in 2008.
