As the Russia-Ukraine war rages on, a Russian strike on Ukraine's western city of Lviv on Tuesday (Sep 3) night, killed seven people, including three children, the Ukrainian officials said.

Internal Affairs Minister Igor Klymenko, on Wednesday, took to the Telegram messaging app, saying, "In total, seven people died in Lviv, including three children."

Mayor of Lviv Andriy Sadovy highlighted that sirens rang out over the Ukrainian city before the morning of Wednesday. He further advised people to take shelter as air defences were working to down a barrage of missiles.

At least 40 injured in attack

Moreover, at least 40 people have been injured, the prosecutor's office said, adding that the attack damaged schools, medical facilities, and buildings in the city centre.

Russia's air attack on Lviv's historic centre prompted Ukrainian officials to call Western allies to provide air defence systems and long-range weapons to retaliate by attacking targets deep inside Russia.

Following Ukraine's surprise attack on Russia's Kursk region, Moscow has intensified its aerial attacks on Kyiv.

Ukrainian minister Klymenko said search and rescue operations have been started in Lviv, located near the border with NATO member Poland, which has largely been spared over the last two and a half years of war.

The latest attack on Lviv was part of a wider barrage across Ukraine, with 13 missiles and 29 drones launched, the Ukrainian air force said, adding that it downed seven missiles and 22 drones.

The Ukrainian emergency services said the Arena hotel had been damaged after the wreckage of a downed missile fell in the central city of Kryvyi Rih, and wounded five people.

'Enemy will pay for what it has done'

Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal reacted to the attack, and said, "The enemy will pay for what it has done."

Kyiv plans to indefinitely hold Russian territory it seized, says Zelensky

The weapons delivered by Ukraine's Western allies, cannot be used against targets located inside Russia, according to the mentioned restrictions.

However, Ukraine has been pushing the West for these restrictions to be lifted.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also called for the Western partners to provide Ukraine with long-range weapons to "respond justly to terror".

A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on Ukraine-Russia war on the ground and online.
