Delhi Capitals look to continue winning streak against Gujarat Giants
WPL 2024
DC have won two of their three games.
Yet to get off the mark after three attempts, Gujarat Giants will have their task cut out when they take on Delhi Capitals in their last game of the Bengaluru leg of WPL 2024.
In three outings, GG captain Beth Mooney has opened with three different partners and only the last pair, involving Laura Wolvaardt, has clicked for them. But that also came at the cost of dropping an experienced pacer in Lea Tahuhu. Nonetheless, after suffering a few key injury setbacks before the start of the season, the Giants finally seemed to have narrowed down their best XI for now.
As was their strategy last season, Delhi have consistently fielded an all-capped XI. After two middling outings, Capitals benched Annabel Sutherland and brought in left-arm spin allrounder in Jess Jonassen who vindicated the call with match-winning allround show alongside Marizanne Kapp. The South African pacer's spells, with new ball and old, have been key to DC's early success in the competition while two of their top-three - Alice Capsey and Shafali Verma - are among the top-five run-scorers thus far.
Barring the last-ball defeat in the tournament opener, Meg Lanning & Co. will be on a high after two back to back wins which included the one against hosts RCB where they posted the season best total of 194 and climbed to the top of the table. Their spot may be in danger during the break day, where RCB take on MI, but against a hapless Gujarat, DC will look to continue their winning streak and solidify their position near the top.
When: Sunday, March 3, at 19:30 local
Where: M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru
What to expect: Opting to chase after winning the toss has been the trend with dew making it easier batting second. Expect that to continue to be the captains' preferred choice.
Team news
Gujarat Giants
Harleen walked off during UP Warriorz's chase due to a knee injury and an update is awaited on her availability for the game. If deemed unfit, Veda Krishnamurthy could find a way back into the XI.
Probable XI: Beth Mooney (C & wk), Laura Wolvaardt, Harleen Deol/Veda Krishnamurthy, Phoebe Litchfield, Ashleigh Gardner, Dayalan Hemalatha, Kathryn Bryce, Sneh Rana, Tanuja Kanwar, Mannat Kashyap, Meghna Singh
Delhi Capitals
Delhi took the tough call to swap Annabel Sutherland for the experience of Jess Jonassen, also for better matchups, and the move worked instantly. They would likely go in with an unchanged XI, save for a last-minute injury.
Probable XI: Meg Lanning (C), Shafali Verma, Alice Capsey, Jemimah Rodrigues, Marizanne Kapp, Jess Jonassen, Arundhati Reddy, Taniyaa Bhatia (wk), Minnu Mani, Shikha Pandey, Radha Yadav
What they said
Both players have good experience (on choosing Jonassen ahead of Sutherland), it's difficult to nail in 4 of them - with JJ, she can hold her nerve and she was excellent with both bat and ball - Meg Lanning, DC Captain, on the tough choice she had to make
